1. Regardless of individual course grades, students must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.
2. Some colleges require a minimum GPA for major courses. Courses indicated in this column are included in the major GPA for this program of study. A 3.0 GPA must be achieved in all education courses.
3. Students who do not place into MATH 122 or 141 will be required to take the required prerequisite before proceeding with MATH 122 or 141.
4. The Carolina Core provides the common core of knowledge, skill and academic experience for all Carolina undergraduate students. Although students may take up to 43 hours to meet all Carolina Core requirements, students in the Middle Level Education program must complete two Carolina Core approved “overlay-eligible” courses in order to graduate on time and avoid summer courses or taking more than five courses in some semesters.
5. The Carolina Core requires either two approved courses in one foreign language or a score of two or higher on the foreign language placement test. If a student in the Middle Level Education program is not exempted from the foreign language requirement through the foreign language placement test, additional courses may be required to meet all Carolina Core components.

7. Content Courses (36-38 hours):
   • a. English Content Requirements (18 hours): EDML 572; ENGL 431A or 431B; ENGL 428A or 428B; ENGL 360, 460, or 461; ENGL 450 or 389; one literature course chosen from among: ENGL 380-386; 400-427; 429; 435-439.
   • b. Science Content Requirements (18-23 hours):
     • i. Two courses (6-8 hours) in Life Science from the following: BIOL 110 (4); BIOL 206 (3); BIOL 243 (3); BIOL 270* (3); SMED 587 (3).
     • ii. Two courses (6-8 hours) in Physical Science from the following: PHYS 201 & PHYS 201L (4); PHYS 202 & PHYS 202L (4); PHYS 153 & PHYS 153L (4); PHYS 155 (3); CHEM 102 (4); CHEM 105 (4); CHEM 111 & CHEM 111L (4); SMED 586 (3).
     • iii. Two courses (6-8 hours) in Earth Science from the following: GEOG 201 (4); GEOG 202 (4); GEOL 101 (4); GEOL 103 (4); GEOL 110 (3); GEOL 302 (4); GEOL 205* (3); MSCI 210 (3); GEOL 215 (3); SMED 588 (3).
   • Note: Courses used to fulfill Carolina Core requirements may not also be used to fulfill major content courses.
   • *If GEOL 103 was used to meet the Carolina Core SCI requirement, neither BIOL 270 or GEOL 205 may be used to fulfill major content courses.
8. For admission into EDML 498 Internship A in the Middle School, a candidate must: 1) be admitted to the professional program; 2) complete with a grade of C or better EDEX 491, EDML 321, EDML 470, and EDML 471; 3) achieve a GPA of 3.00 or higher in all education course work; & 4) comply with criminal background check and health screening requirements.
9. For admission to EDML 499 Internship B in the Middle School, a candidate must: 1) complete EDML 498 with a grade of B or better; 2) complete with a grade of C or better EDTE 522, the two EDML Methods courses, and EDRM 423; & 3) complete four of the six courses in each of the two content areas.

Program Notes

• Courses designated as “critical” (!) must be taken in the semester in which they are listed.
• All undergraduate students must take a 3-credit course or its equivalent with a passing grade that covers the founding documents. This course may fulfill any requirement in the program of study. Courses that meet this requirement are listed in the academic bulletin.
• Upon completion of 60 hours of course work, including the completion of the 9-semester-hour education core (EDTE 201, EDFI 300, and EDPY 401), the candidate may apply for admission to the Professional Education Program in Middle Level Education. For admission requirements to the Professional Program, please visit the Bulletin.
• Students in the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education will be allowed to repeat one time only, one course offered through a department in the College of Education for which an unsatisfactory grade was earned. If after the first unsatisfactory grade, a student makes an unsatisfactory grade in the repeated course or any other College of Education course, he/she will no longer be eligible to progress in the program.
• All initial teacher licensure programs in the College of Education require extensive field experiences in P-12 schools. All students must read and understand the rules and expectations outlined in the Preservice Teacher Education Clinical Experiences Manual. Prior to participating in school field experiences, students must have been cleared through a criminal background check and must have a negative test for TB on file with the College of Education.
