1. Students must maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.
2. Courses indicated in the major GPA column are included in the major GPA for this program of study, and a 3.0 GPA must be achieved in all education courses.
3. The Carolina Core provides the common core of knowledge, skill and academic experience for all Carolina undergraduate students.  Although students may take up to 43 hours to meet all Carolina Core requirements, students in the Middle Level Education program must complete two Carolina Core approved “overlay-eligible” courses in order to graduate on time and avoid summer courses or taking more than five courses in some semesters. 
4. The Carolina Core requires either two approved courses in one Foreign Language or a score of two or higher on the foreign language placement test.  If a student in the Middle Level Education program is not exempted from the foreign language requirement through the foreign language placement test, additional courses may be required to meet all Carolina Core components.

6. Content Courses (36-38 hours)
   1. Social Studies Content Requirements (18 hours): HIST 101 (may not be used to meet the Carolina Core GHS requirement); HIST 102 (may not also be used to meet the Carolina Core GHS requirement); HIST 111 or 112 (may not also be used to meet the Carolina Core GHS requirement); GEOG 561; select one course from the following: HIST 409, 410, 442, SOST 201, SOST 202; select one course from the following: additional 300-level HIST, ANTH 205, 327, 331, 335, 341, ECON 224.
   2. Mathematics Content Requirements (18-20 hours): MATH 603, 142 (if not used for Carolina Core requirement), or EDTE 500; MATH 602, 531, or EDTE 501; MATH 401 or 241; STAT 201; select 2 courses from the following: MATH 141 (if not used for Carolina Core requirement); MATH 142 (if not used above); MATH 241(if not used above); MATH 170 or MATH 174 (–if not used for Carolina Core requirement); MATH 511; MATH 544; MATH 546; MATH 574; MATH 580; STAT 506; STAT 515; STAT 516. 
7. Additional Literature or History (3 hours): ENGL 283, 285, 287, 288, or an additional History course.
8. For admission into EDML 498 Internship A in the Middle School, a candidate must: 1) be admitted to the professional program; 2) complete with a grade of C or better EDEX 491, EDML 321, EDML 470, and EDML 471; 3) achieve a GPA of 3.00 or higher in all education course work; & 4) comply with criminal background check and health screening requirements. 
9. For admission to EDML 499 Internship B in the Middle School, a candidate must: 1) complete EDML 498 with a grade of B or better; 2) complete with a grade of C or better EDTE 522, the two EDML Methods courses, and EDRM 423; & 3) complete four of the six courses in each of the two content areas. 

Program Notes

• Courses designated as “critical” (!) must be taken in the semester in which they are listed.
• All undergraduate students must take a 3-credit course or its equivalent with a passing grade that covers the founding documents. This course may fulfill any requirement in the program of study. Courses that meet this requirement are listed in the academic bulletin. 
• Upon completion of 60 hours of course work, including the completion of the 9-semester-hour education core (EDTE 201, EDFI 300, and EDPY 401), the candidate may apply for admission to the Professional Education Program in Middle Level Education.  For admission requirements to the Professional Program, please visit the Bulletin. 
• Students in the Department of Instruction and Teacher Education will be allowed to repeat one time only, one course offered through a department in the College of Education for which an unsatisfactory grade was earned.  If after the first unsatisfactory grade, a student makes an unsatisfactory grade in the repeated course or any other College of Education course, he/she will no longer be eligible to progress in the program. 
• All initial teacher licensure programs in the College of Education require extensive field experiences in P-12 schools.  All students must read and understand the rules and expectations outlined in the Preservice Teacher Education Clinical Experiences Manual.  Prior to participating in school field experiences, students must have been cleared through a criminal background check and must have a negative test for TB on file with the College of Education.
