1. Regardless of individual course grades, students must maintain a minimum 2.000 cumulative GPA.
2. Some colleges require a minimum GPA for major courses. Courses indicated in this column are included in the major GPA for this program of study.
3. Students in the German with Teaching Certification program must complete German language through 211 by the start of the second year in order to graduate in four years. If a student places out of GERM 210 and 211, a Humanities or Fine Arts course would be required in place of each as part of the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences curriculum.
4. The Carolina Core provides the common core of knowledge, skill and academic experience for all Carolina undergraduate students.
5. Foreign Language Education Minor Courses (11 hours): EDPY 401; EDTE 201; EDEX 491; EDRD 500. *Students may substitute EDEX 523 if needed due to scheduling conflicts with EDEX 491.
6. The McCausland College of Arts and Sciences requires one U.S. History and one non-U.S. History course, both of which must be chosen from the approved Carolina Core GHS courses. Whichever is not fulfilled through the Carolina Core GHS requirement must be fulfilled through this college requirement.
7. Students in the German PK-12 Certification Concentration must complete the Foreign Language Education minor as part of the program. GERM major requirements for the PK-12 Teacher Certification Concentration include: Select 12 hours from GERM 220-598. Only one 200-level GERM course may apply to the concentration.   Only three GERM courses taught in English may apply to the major.  German majors taking a course in English must do some of the readings in German, where possible.  GERM 398 may be repeated, as topics vary. Students may include one German culture course at the 300 level and above from the following: ARTH 321, 326; HIST 338, 375, 376, 380; LING 503, 533, 548; PHIL 502, 509; RELG 373; JSTU 373, 492. 
8. No courses of a remedial, developmental, skill-acquiring, or vocational nature may apply as credit toward degrees in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. The McCausland College of Arts and Sciences allows the use of the Pass-Fail option on elective courses.
9. Internship A, Observation, involves the application of effective teaching techniques and organization of instructional settings in foreign languages for pre-K-12. The Professional Program and Internship Application deadlines are March 15 for fall placement and December 1 for spring placement. The certification application must be submitted by April 15.
10. In Internship B, Student Teaching, students apply curriculum and assessment methods, professionalism, effective teaching, and classroom organization in a foreign language classroom. Before Internship B, students must complete a double-rated Oral Proficiency Interview at advanced-low or above and during Internship B they must take the Praxis II Exam.

Program Notes

• Courses identified as “critical” must be completed in the student’s first 60 semester hours of work in order for these courses to be credited toward graduation.
• All undergraduate students must take a 3-credit course or its equivalent with a passing grade that covers the founding documents. This course may fulfill any requirement in the program of study. Courses that meet this requirement are listed in the academic bulletin. 
• Normally, students pursuing the teacher certification concentration may apply 300 or higher level education courses and/or higher level FORL courses to the cognate.  The cognate is intended to support the course work in the major.  The cognate must consist of twelve hours of courses at the advanced level, outside of, but related to the major.  In place of a cognate, a student may choose a minor consisting of at least 18 credit hours of courses concentrated in one area that follow a structured sequence.  A second major eliminates the minor/cognate requirement. 
• Application and admission to the professional program in education/internship are required for all majors seeking teacher certification.  All teacher education candidates must adhere to all education policies and procedures related to clinical experiences and meet University and S.C. Board of Education requirements in order to be recommended for certification.  Information is available from academic advisors or the College of Education, Office of Student Affairs, at 803-777-6732. 
• The last 30 credit hours toward your degree must be earned in residence at the University of South Carolina-Columbia.
