Experiential and Engaged Learning

At the University of South Carolina, your education goes beyond the classroom to application of learning in your areas of interest through service, internships, research, study abroad and leadership opportunities.  Whether you focus on campus offerings, move out into the local community or study abroad, it is important to find ways to collaborate with others to apply your studies and explore new possibilities.

Engaged Learning Opportunities are purposeful experiences to test the waters, explore new areas of interest, and get to know others who share your passions. Reach out to the community through participation in a Service Saturday, peruse options for learning through travel at the Study Abroad Fair, attend an Undergraduate Research workshop, exchange ideas at a diversity event or get involved in a student organization that fits your interests!

Experiential Learning Opportunities (ELOs) go a step farther as you focus more and dig deeper into an area of interest. Experiential Learning Opportunities can be credit-bearing (i.e., courses) or non-credit bearing. What sets them apart is sustained engagement (at least 45 hours) with deliberate reflection and feedback from others that can provide you with insights and build your confidence in finding the path that is right for you!

Graduation with Leadership Distinction (GLD) recognizes extensive engagement, learning and application to leadership on your transcript and diploma. GLD requires approximately 300 hours of engagement, related coursework, a public presentation, and an ePortfolio reflecting on what you have learned and how you will apply it.

Professional Licensure Information
State boards of professional licensure and certification may limit distributed learning and/or experiential learning activities outside of South Carolina for programs leading to professional licensure. Information for each program leading to professional licensure is found in the Professional Licensure Outcomes statement. Students should contact the appropriate state licensing board for detailed rules regarding distributed learning (online coursework) or experiential learning in the state prior to enrolling or engaging in online or on-the-ground coursework outside of South Carolina.
