EMPOWER You! Outline

  • Reintroductions of Students & EMPOWER DPEs
    • We will engage the students following on ways in which they have reflected upon the experience they had the last time EMPOWER came to their classroom, how they may have changed the way they see interactions with the world.
  • Core Concepts of Diversity & Social Justice
    • Reintroduce diversity and discuss social justice
      • If diversity is defined as the culmination of experience & identity, how can we define social justice?
      • This will become a dialogue led by questions, but our definition is:
        • The action of creating an environment where all are embraced for the part they play in society
  • Overview & Examples of Micoroaggressions
    • Micoraggressions are one way in which to destroy community. We will begin by defining microaggressions through an allegorical story that all can relate with. These will be explained by the POP (Pile on Principle).
    • This will be illustrated by a story of stepping on one’s toe. This happens several times over the course of the day, and while no one means harm (intent vs. impact) it certainly impacts your day. Transliterate that into micoraggressions that some people experience on a regular basis.
    • These micoroaggressions will be shown through anonymous stats and screen-captures
    • We will also show the ways in which the internet can be harmful to the creation of community due to the perceived element of anonymity.
  • Processing & Dialogue
    • How are micoraggressions harmful to creating community?
    • Have you seen these occur in your lived experiences?
    • What are ways in which we can combat these actions to foster a more inclusive Carolina?
