University 101 Programs

EMPOWER Outline

  • Introductions of Students & EMPOWER DPEs through our screen name icebreaker
    • Students introduce themselves and talk about their first email or AIM screen name. This allows for students to see the diversity within the classroom both in interests, as well as age, as some students, faculty and staff didn’t have a screen name/email address until college.
  • Building Community Norms & Values
    • The creation of a full value contract, a community led discussion about mutual expectations to have during the course of our workshop, binding this in with the Carolinian Creed’s values.
  • Core Concepts of Diversity
    • Using the Holistic Being as a model, we will dialogue regarding the different identities that we all inhabit. We will examine the multiple identities that we inhabit. Some of these categories of identities that we cover are the differences between race & ethnicity as well as sex & gender, as well as socioeconomic status, education status, ability status, belief structure, age, country of origin, and regionality.
    • We will also cover during this time the idea of intersections of identity, that the sum of all of our identities, in addition with our unique experiences, create our own personal diversity; thus we are all diverse.
  • Childhood Messages Activity
    • In this activity, students are asked to disclose to themselves, in writing, the messages they received about various groups from different places of influence including: parents, teachers, peers and the media. This can be accomplished in groups or by themselves, depending on the class dynamic. This activity, should take around 15 minutes to accomplish the worksheet for 3-4 different groups. These groups will be reflective of the identities we discuss using the holistic being as a model
