Don't Be Cocky: Advising Matters!

The Student Success Center's “Don't Be Cocky: Advising Matters” presentation provides students with vital information on the advising and registration process at the University of South Carolina. Students will test their knowledge while learning facts about the advisement process. This fun and interactive presentation includes activities, handouts, and a Q&A session which informs students as well as assists in their transition to college advising. Students will be involved and engaged while being equipped with the details of how to navigate advising at USC.

Learning Outcomes

The “Don’t Be Cocky: Advising Matters” presentation supports University 101 learning outcomes:

I. Foster Academic Success

f. Identify relevant academic policies, processes, and procedures related to advising, course planning, and major exploration

This presentation will address the procedures related to advising, including finding their departmental advisor, preparing for the advising appointment, the process of changing their major, and how registration occurs. We are also discussing and demonstrating how to effectively use the Academic Bulletin and Self Service Carolina in relation to advising, registration, and understanding the requirements of majors and minors.

II. Help Students Discover and Connect With the University of South Carolina

a. Identify appropriate campus resources and opportunities that contribute to their educational experience, goals, and campus engagement

During the presentation we will highlight the Student Success Center as well as Cross College Advising to introduce students to the services we provide as well as to invite them to take advantage of them. We will also highlight the Office of Pre-Professional Advising.

b. Develop and apply skills that contribute to building positive relationships with peers, staff and faculty

We stress that the relationship between an advisor and student should be an interactive one; one that allows for discussion of ideas and goals. This relationship should be encouraged and utilized by the student to allow for a better understanding of the requirements of their major, future career plans, and potential for experiential learning opportunities that will enrich their education here at USC.

As a result of attending this presentation students will:

  • Have a better understanding of the USC advising process
  • Have a better understanding of how to successfully prepare for advising and registration
  • Have a better understanding of online tools pertaining to registration such as the Academic Bulletin and Self Service Carolina

 Presentation Outline

  • Introduction
  • "What Is Advising?" As a group we will discuss what advising is, expectations, and experiences.
  • Advising Fact or Crap
  • As a part of the Fact or Crap segment of the presentation, the Programs A-Z portion of the Academic Bulletin (majors and minors requirements) and Self Service Carolina will be explored. Students will be shown how to use this section of the bulletin to understand their program requirements as well as to use it to prepare for advising appointments. During the Self Service demonstration, a student volunteer will log into Self Service. As a group we will walk through system to explore the different tabs including, registration, holds, add/drop classes, and adding advanced classes. We will have a brief Q&A about the bulletin and Self Service Carolina at this time. The university calendar, will be reviewed as it relates to registration, dropping and adding courses, and the withdrawal deadline.

Presenter Training
Each peer advisor (PA) will be attending a presentation workshop detailing the dos, don'ts and tips for presenting. The workshop will also cover the information to be presented. After given time to prepare, the PAs will practice giving the presentation to each other as well as the professional staff advisors. Feedback will be provided. Professional staff members attend the presentation until the PA is prepared to present on their own.
