Detailed description of topics to be covered, and active learning strategies to be used:

  • Basic definitions of Diversity - We will start with a "Free Write" activity allowing the participants to define diversity on their own terms and then to list what they think diversity encompasses. We will then allow the group to share their definitions and follow with a standard definition for the age group. This will include up-to-date terminology for diverse groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, sex, gender and so on.

  • Campus Statistics - Gathered from Data Warehouse and Factbook annually. This topic is covered in a brief lecture style format, but with many opportunities for participants to guess statistics or contribute their thoughts on statistics. Participation is encouraged and awarded with OMSA promotional items or treats.

  • Personal Identity/Cultural Awareness Activities and Information - Anti-Defamation League: A World of Difference worksheets and activities are provided based on the instructor's needs. Worksheets and activities utilize the three-step "Think-Pair-Share" active learning strategy enabling participants to arrive at their own answers based off previous knowledge and new knowledge gained through information provided in our presentation. They will then be encouraged to share their interpretations thus enhancing their ability to convey new knowledge and to express their current understanding of the topic.
