Trumpet Studio Audition Requirements

Undergraduate - BA/Music Minor

Candidates in the brass area should prepare two movements from different compositions of choice from the standard solo repertoire that show a contrast in style (one fast and the other slow and lyrical). Two single movement works are also acceptable. All-State materials are also acceptable for this degree only. Accompaniment is not required. Major scales should be prepared; sightreading will be required. Auditions run approx. 10 minutes in length. Sightreading and scales may be asked.

Undergraduate - Music Education (BMUED, non-performance)

Candidates in the brass area should prepare two movements from different compositions of choice from the standard solo repertoire that show a contrast in style (one fast and the other slow and lyrical). Two single movement works are also acceptable. Accompaniment is not required. Major scales should be prepared; sightreading will be required. (Solo example include, but not limited to: Haydn Concerto, Hummel Concerto, Arutunian Concerto, Kennan, Sonata, Stevens, Sonata. Also: works by Bozza, Donato, Ropartz, Arban/Clarke, et al.) Auditions run approx. 10 minutes in length. Sightreading and scales may be asked.

Undergraduate - Performance (B.M. and Performer's Certificate)

  • Kent Kennan, Sonata for Trumpet (Mvt I)
  • F. J. Haydn, Concerto for Trumpet (Mvt II)
  • Goedicke Concert Etude
  • Orchesral Excerpts: Mahler 5 (opening), Pictures (opening), Pines of Rome (off stage solo)

Auditions run approx. 10 minutes in length.  Sightreading and scales may be asked.

Graduate - (M.M. and D.M.A.)

Graduate auditions are prescreened in the USC trumpet studio. Your video recording must be presented in a DVD format or through social media (vimeo, youtube, etc.) by Dec. 8, 2014 and sent: Prof. James Ackley, 813 Assembly St., Columbia, SC 29208 or via email. Finalists will then be invited to take part in a live audition (sometime between January to March). Both materials for the video recording and the live audition must contain:

  • A piccolo trumpet work of choice (one movement only - Fasch, Tartini, Torelli, Corelli, Telemann, Richter, et al.)
  • Longinotti Etude No. 7, complete
  • Haydn or Hummel Trumpet Concerto (Mvts. I-II), with cadenzas when appropriate
  • Tomasi Trumpet Concerto (Mvt. I, exposition only)
  • Choice of unaccompanied solo trumpet work (Intrada, Solus, Cascades, Postcards, et al.), if multi-movement, then only one movement must be presented (you choose).
  • Orchestral Excerpts:  Mahler 5 (opening), Petroushka (Ballerina Dance), Pictures (opening), Pines (offstage), Beethoven Leonore Call (Nos. 2 & 3).  These excerpts, no exceptions.

Live audition durations are approx. 20-25 minutes in length. Sightreading and scales may be asked. Students wishing to apply for a graduate assistantship will also interview at the time of the audition.
