Biography

Dr. J. Matthew “Matt” Orr is the Associate Dean for Continuous Professional Development & Strategic Affairs at the University Of South Carolina School Of Medicine Columbia -Prisma Health Midlands where he works with organizational leaders and the CPD/CME team to develop and implement programs designed to meet physicians’ and other clinicians’ needs for lifelong learning and performance improvement across the broad and diverse range of their responsibilities as clinicians, educators, scientists, and leaders. In particular, he leads the office’s Physician Leadership Institute, a year-long executive leadership experience for physicians across the USC-Prisma Health Midlands Affiliate system. He and the Office of CPDSA regularly partner with GME colleagues to integrate educational initiatives and resources to address faculty development, human-centered communication, and practitioner well-being. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and works to establish MI learning across the continuum of medical education. He is the Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA) Regional Representative to the national AAMC Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Section. 

Dr. Orr is an Associate Professor of Clinical Family and Preventive Medicine at the University Of South Carolina School Of Medicine and has been a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for over 25 years. He served as the Director of Behavioral Medicine for the Department and the Palmetto Health-USC Family Medicine Residency Program from 2008-2018, specializing in ADHD, parent-child relationships, anxiety, mindfulness, performance psychology, system dynamics, and brief solution-focused counseling in primary care. He continues to teach in the areas of Motivational Interviewing and human-centered communication. In 2018, Matt received The Sharm Steadman Excellence in Family Medicine Education Award from the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium.   

After receiving a bachelor of science in family and child sciences from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, Dr. Orr earned a master of science in marriage and family therapy from East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. He then obtained a doctorate in marriage and family therapy from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas.
