Commission on Lawyer Conduct: Office of Disciplinary Counsel

This office is charged by the SC Supreme Court to investigate and prosecute allegations of misconduct by lawyers in SC. Volunteers will assist the office on a range of projects including research and file organization. Students must be willing to be flexible in their duties yet provide assistance on a regular basis. Knowledge and adherence to confidentiality is extremely important

Purpose of Pro Bono Opportunity

  • To provide opportunities for law students to work along side the attorneys in the disciplinary system in SC
  • To provide skills development and enhancement opportunities for law students
  • To create an awareness of the problems and reasons that result in lawyer discipline
  • To create an awareness of the disciplinary process and the assistance available to prevent problems

Requirements or Qualifications

Law students must:

  • be a good academic standing
  • complete and submit the Volunteer Enrollment Form
  • to have a knowledge of the role and need for confidentiality
  • have an ability to be flexible in accepting work assignments
  • be willing to volunteer on a regular basis

Responsibilities of Organizations

The Commission on Lawyer Conduct: Office of Disciplinary Counsel must:

  • agree to properly supervise the work of the law student
  • provide clear and timely instructions
  • seek opportunities to expose the students to various tasks
  • provide feedback when possible.

Responsibilities of the Students

The students must:

  • communicate effectively and efficiently with the Office of Disciplinary Counsel’s office and the supervising attorney
  • complete tasks in a timely and competent manner
  • seek assistance when needed
  • perform duties professionally
  • treat this volunteer opportunity as if it was a paying or for-credit position
