SCDOT Certification

Registration Requirements

Review the requirements and fill out a registration form. Be sure to select the level (or levels) you are applying for and  indicate your preferred class.  You can fax your completed form to Annie Kawamoto at 803-777-1727. These classes usually fill quickly, so register today.

Required Documents

A Technician Experience Form is required for all applicants who wish to attend the SCDOT Concrete Technician Certification review class and examination. In order to be certified by the SCDOT as a Concrete Technician, an individual must have a minimum level of familiarity and at least six months experience with the related test procedures, forms, specifications, and general operations. Signatures on this form attest that as of the date signed, the applicant has the required minimum experience in these areas. This form must be submitted with the registration form, or prior to the one-month deadline for the class, along with a copy of the applicant's previous Concrete certification or the rater's current Concrete certification.

Registrations without the appropriate, completed experience form submitted by the registration deadline will have their class space forfeited.

SCDOT Certification is only valid with current certification as a Concrete Field Testing Technician by the American Concrete Institute (ACI). Although ACI Certification is not a pre-requisite to attending the SCDOT written examination held at USC, proof of ACI certification must be submitted to our offices no later than one year from successful completion of the written examination. SCDOT Concrete Technician certification may be granted only after both courses have been completed. ACI certification must then be independently maintained to avoid possible suspension of SCDOT Technician Certification. For American Concrete Institute (ACI) Technician Certification information and scheduling, please refer to their website www.concrete.org or contact Mary Baer at 704-588-9601.

Certification Renewals

NOTE: If applying for recertification, please include a copy of your certificate with your registration forms.

For those who need to renew their Concrete Technician certification, the same steps will need to be taken regardless whether the certification has lapsed. The class is only review and is not intended for those who do not have prior experience in the areas to be covered; therefore, recertification is not treated any differently than initial certification.

As of June 1, 2005, the SCDOT Technician Certification Board has determined that the certification expiration dates for recertification obtained one year prior to the technician's original date of expiration will be issued from the original expiration date. For example, if a technician's certification expires April 2006, and that technician passes a recertification examination in April 2005, the certification will then be extended five years from the original expiration in April 2006 to April 2011. However, if that technician chooses to attend and pass a recertification examination in March 2005, the recertification will be valid from March 2005 to March 2010; in such a case, the technician passed the examination outside of the one-year window. If a technician does not pass a recertification examination prior to the original expiration date in April 2006, the certification will expire on the original expiration date.
