How to Apply

IGERT fellowships are available for motivated students from engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science, and related fields. Students with a B.S. and/or M.S. degree in these fields are encouraged to apply.

Application Process

The IGERT PhD Fellowship support includes full tuition and fees, and a stipend of $30,000 for the full academic year. The Fellowship is a two-year Fellowship and only open to U.S. citizen or permanent residents, who are applying to the doctoral degree in one of IGERT participating departments. Each Fellowship recipient also receives funds to travel to scientific conferences and defray educational expenses, and to participate in a 3-6 month international research internship in China or Japan. Women and underrepresented minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. Since IGERT PhD students are admitted to their department with appropriate full stipend and tuition support, they are supported through this mechanism when not receiving the IGERT PhD Fellowship funding.

The following are the steps to apply:

1. Apply online for admission to the graduate program of one of the participating departments by visiting the Graduate School, clicking on Apply, and following the instructions.

2. After step 1 is complete, fill out the online IGERT application. The application asks you for your personal information, your USC graduate school application ID number and an essay. The essay should articulate your career goals, the special reasons you are seeking an interdisciplinary degree program and the interdisciplinary research thrust that is of interest, and how you envision your future career impacting society. In addition, describe your interest in developing entrepreneurship skills and gaining international experience through a research internship in China and/or Japan.
