Larianne Collins


Dr. Collins is a Research Associate with the South Carolina Geographic Alliance and a lecturer in the Geography Department at the University of South Carolina. Larianne received her B.S. (1998) in Social Studies from Presbyterian College, M.Ed. (2002) in Secondary Education, and Ph.D. (2014) in Geography from the University of South Carolina. Prior to her arrival at USC, Larianne was a secondary Social Studies teacher and secondary Assistant Principal in the Columbia area. She has served as Editorial Assistant of Journal of Geography since 2010 and received the Women in Geographic Education Award from the National Council for Geographic Education in 2014. Larianne is also a question writer and reader for the AP Human Geography exam. Her research interests include geography education, spatial thinking, geospatial technologies, and curriculum and teacher development.



Dr. Collins’ research lies in geography education with specific interests in spatial thinking, geospatial technology use in the classroom, and curriculum and teacher development. She has co-authored the South Carolina Social Studies Support Document for World Geography for the state standards. She has recently studied the impact of paper versus digital map technology on students’ spatial thinking skill acquisition, funded by the National Science Foundation. Currently, she is working on developing learning progressions for maps, geospatial technology, and spatial thinking with the GeoProgressions Project sponsored by the Association of American Geographers, National Geographic Society, National Science Foundation, and The National Center for Research in Geography Education.
