The Office of Nursing Practice, located on the sixth floor of the Williams Brice Building, serves the College by providing administrative leadership and guidance in all faculty practice venues. The Office continues to maintain several nursing centers and additional contracts with agencies across the state of South Carolina. Based on a model of health promotion, illness prevention, and health maintenance, these centers and contracts offer advanced practice nursing services to patients and consumers across the lifespan and healthcare continuum.
The CON practice centers and contracts enhance the University’s mission of education and research by providing clinical sites for practice, clinical experiences, and research for both faculty and students. Doctor of Nursing Practice students find these sites rich for experiences to apply evidence based practice.
Faculty involved in the centers and clinic sties include advanced practice nursing graduate faculty supervising students in a variety of roles. As in previous years, advanced practice nursing students spend one to two days with the faculty member in each designated nurse practitioner course. This allows the faculty member to evaluate the student for synthesizing didactic material in order to provide patient care services. The CON sites even serve as clinical rotations for Doctorate of Pharmacy students. These students participate in medication reviews, audits, patient teaching, and other center activities.
Community health nursing faculty supervise undergraduate students in the practice sites also. These undergraduate nursing students are offered opportunities such as community assessment of select and diverse comminutes, implementing teaching projects for patients, and health promotion activities at some of the local area shelters and with the Sheriff’s Department.
For the academic year 2007-08, over 200 students rotated through our practice sites for a total of 4055 clock hours.
