Background

Mrs. Cox is a family nurse practitioner certified by the ANCC.  She graduated from the University of South Carolina and has been teaching in the graduate program since 1994, while maintaining active clinical practice.  Her clinical experience includes provision of primary health care services in numerous settings such as, private practice and clinics.  

Teaching

Mrs. Cox has taught primarily graduate level courses but also undergraduate level.  Her primary teaching focus is physical assessment and advanced practice areas. She designed the undergraduate Health Assessment course and the online graduate Advanced Health Assessment course.  Additional major course design and delivery include the graduate course, Primary Care of Adults which focuses on women’s health conditions and acute, episodic health problems and the Advanced Practice Nursing Management of Chronic Diseases in Primary Care.  She also has served as a clinical preceptor for the graduate advanced practice nursing students and has mentored undergraduate nursing students in the clinical arena.   She has served as adjunctive instructor for ACS in teaching CBE to graduate APRN students and Pharm D students.

Research

Mrs. Cox’s research areas have included job satisfaction of Nurse Practitioners, women’s health, teaching clinical breast exams and homelessness.

Dissemination

Mrs. Cox’s recent presentations included Pedagogical Approaches to Teaching Clinical Content Online: New Lessons for Nurse Educators at Drexel University Technologic  Innovations in Nursing Education Conference and at  the Mary Ann Parsons Lectureship, Teaching Physical Assessment Techniques: Clinical Breast Exams at the Carolina Women’s Health Research Forum and  the Mary Ann Parsons Lectureship,  Case Study Methodology: Preparing Students for the 21st Century, NONPF 24TH Annual Meeting and  The Homeless: Health Behaviors and Motivators for Care, 7th Annual Research Day, Sigma Theta Tau.

Professional Service

Mrs. Cox serves on several College of Nursing councils and committees.  She is active in professional organizations such as ANA and Sigma Theta Tau.  She is or has been active in other organizations such as, SC Cancer Alliance, Boy and Girl Scouts of America, South Carolina State Board of Nursing, Lee County Health Fair, Women’s Shelter of Columbia, and Helping Hands Medical Clinic of Goose Creek.  She serves as Faculty Advisor for Sigma Alpha Omega and has received the Graduate Teaching Award, Palmetto Gold Award and others.

Professional Practice

Mrs. Cox has practiced in numerous settings including both urban and rural. Her clinical experiences have primarily been in provision of primary health care services in private practice and clinics. Currently, she sees patients on a weekly basis at the USC Specialty Clinics, College of Nursing, Children and Family Healthcare Center.   Additionally, she assisted in the establishment of a practice (USC Primary Care Partners) site on campus, and served as the initial nurse practitioner.  At USC, Mrs. Cox sees a variety of patients presenting for acute and chronic health problems, physicals and contraceptive care.  She especially enjoys women’s health care issues and educating patients on health prevention.

Research Studies (Selected)

Research studies include job satisfaction of nurse practitioners, indicators of health in the homelessness and clinical breast exams.  Funded research includes an American Nurses Foundation grant for research on job satisfaction of nurse practitioners.
