McKissick Museum to host Basket Day April 17
The McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina invites the public to the historic Horseshoe for Basket Day April 17.
From 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., Lowcountry basket makers will demonstrate their craft and sell their products. Other events include a performance by the Woyate West African Drum and Dance Company, storytelling, “Grass Roots” exhibition tours and rice winnowing demonstrations. Visitors may bring in their own baskets to learn how to preserve them.
Sponsors of Basket Day include Johnson Toal and Battiste, PA; the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties, the SC Arts Commission and Glory Communications, Inc.
“Grass Roots,” on view at McKissick Museum through May 8, tells the history of coiled basket making in South Carolina and Africa. It features more than 200 objects, including documents, paintings and video footage, as well as some of the finest examples of African and American artistry.
