Just wanted to mark our debut!
Laurel is going to take all the new guides that have been created up to this point and link them to the subject drop down box on the LibGuides tab. However, once this tab “goes live” on the homepage any new guides that are created will need to be added via a submission to the Web Submit system. Please notify your department’s webbie (Gerri for us Reference folks) so they can make a request through Web Submit when you have a new guide that needs to go up.
LGers,
Thanks to Laurel’s genius, I’ve stolen her Gamecock Power Search code for LibGuides and created side boxes for each of the fourteen quicksearch categories - one with each category defaulted at the top of the drop down. (See example on the Find Articles tab in my Sociology guide http://guides.library.sc.edu/content.php?mode=preview&pid=2381&sid=11733.)
These boxes are available for copying into your LibGuides from my *unpublished* guide called “GPS Search Boxes”. I’ve used short titles to distinguish the categories. After you copy, you’ll probably want to edit the box title and the generic text blurb at the top of the box.

A coupla things:
1. I suggest that you COPY the box, not Link to it. This allows you to edit the title of the box and the content of the blurb for your specific needs. All of the category boxes are set up to “call” the same javascript, so we should be able to keep the code updated even with copying.
2. After copying, don’t panic when you don’t see the search text box or the GO button - you will when you hit preview.
Let me know if you have any q’s or if something doesn’t work!

Hi Gang,
Bob asked me about searching the catalog for e-books to use with his LibGuides. What a good idea and I hadn’t thought of it beyond our e reference collections!
The best tip for searching (which I’m about to tell you) can be found from Library Services > Collections > Electronic Books http://www.sc.edu/library/pubserv/ebooks.html
Using the Material Type won’t find all the e-books.
Use keyword or advanced keyword “electronic books” and topic word(s)
It will find online books and also the records of print books with online content provided as well.
