RUSA President’s Program: Time Odyssey: Visions of Reference & User Services
This was a great program, really got you thinking about the future of information in general and the reference librarian’s role. The general consensus was that libraries and librarians will always be around in some fashion…nothing shocking there, we have heard that before. But the panel was a really interesting mix and provided a wide range of perspectives. They were told to think ahead to 2017 and describe the role of libraries and librarians in the future. I am going to try to briefly sum up their presentations:
Genevieve Bell - PhD in Anthropology, Director of User Experience, Intel
An anthropologist studying user experience at Intel…how cool is that? Her take on libraries is that they will survive because they serve an essential role in society. They have a “center of gravity” in society, they foster learning, they exude a sense of tradition and offer legitimacy to the information they contain/provide. As far as print vs. electronic information she believes “paper is a stubborn and persistent artifact” and not likely to completely disappear anytime soon. She said libraries have always been “high tech” and always will be. The real value in what librarians do, and what will ensure their continued existence, is that they help filter and organize the ever-increasing amount of information to which we are exposed.
Lee Rainie - Director, Pew Internet & American Life Project
Due to expanded public policy on broadband issues, he believes we will have a more efficient and more secure internet in 2017, that sounds nice. He also thinks ownership of information and online surveillance will become huge policy issues. He mentioned the fact that teens are putting alot of personal information on the internet and what will happen when they get older and potential employers, dates, or college admissions officers google them? He got applause when he introduced his 10 reasons the future of information belongs to librarians, of course I can’t remember them all but basically we are good at finding, organizing, and evaluating stuff
Allen Renear - Professor of Library and Information Science at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
He believes in 2017 researchers won’t come to libraries looking for “articles to read” they will do something more like “flying a jet through information space”. In 2017 relevant papers available on any given topic will exceed the capacity of human ability for reading. So instead of finding and reading, they will practice “literature mining” which involves scanning the text for uncommon knowledge and thesis development. He sees libraries providing “Scholarly search environments” where researchers can be fully engaged similar to playing a video game. Users will navigate these search environments by “bouncing” and “flicking” and absorbing what is out there as opposed to reading anything in a linear fashion. He believes librarians need to create the tools which will provide support in this horizontal exploration of scholarly literature.
Wendy Schultz - Director of Infinite Futures and Fellow of the World Futures Studies Federation
This lady has a degree in futurology or some such (from Hawaii no less, like anyone could get a quality education there 
)and she believes that all librarians should be futurists. She recommends “environmental scanning” i.e. looking for patterns in chaos, paying attention to trends, listening to trumpets of change and monitoring them, see if they are gaining momentum. Question how we are relating to those around us, how are we creating and consuming things? The new role for reference librarians is to be “foresight swim coaches”, we will divert the water hose of information into streams which we will sip from and communicate back to each other. Sounds like a spitting contest to me! Kidding aside I can see her point…we will organize and filter information and always be poised to adapt…or better yet foresee the future and stay ahead of the game.
Steven Bell, Associate University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services at Temple University
He summed up the session by saying personalized, humanistic service is our forte and the future librarian needs to be both high tech and high touch. He then posed questions to the panel, such as, “will the reference desk disappear in the future. The best answer I heard was from Genevieve Bell she said, “Don’t worry about, you all have been asking that since “Desk Set” and it hasn’t disappeared yet!”
