Portico Participants’ Meeting at ALA Annual Conference in Washington, DC
Portico enlists publishers to agree to provide continued access to ejournals even if the publisher goes out of business. (http://www.portico.org/) USC-Columbia is a participating library. In all, 362 libraries participate. Our annual cost to participate is $8050.00/yr.
This was Portico’s 2nd all participants meeting.
Presenters were: Anne Kenney, Interim University Librarian, Cornell University Library and Richard Fyffe, Librarian of the College, Grinnell College.
After the presentations we got an update from Eileen Fenton, Portico’s Executive Director.

Ms. Kenney reviewed the findings and recommendations of the 2006 report from CLIR. The report compared 12 different digital access initiatives, including Portico and LOCKSS and presented a set of recommendations for libraries, publishers, and ejournal archiving organizations.
Kenney reviewed the current state of these efforts. 128 publishers have signed some sort of agreement. This represents over 34,000 journal titles covered by at least one agreement. Despite this, coverage of titles is uneven. Broader coverage is available for science, technology, and medical (STM) titles. Coverage is spotty in the humanities.
Interesting info:
-A Cornell study established that their participation cost per title was $10. If true, this seems a reasonable cost of participation. I was not able to find this study.
