RUSA -MARS See it, Hear it, Touch it: How Do Learning Styles Affect Virtual Reference Service?

This was a panel discussion where virtual reference service leaders were asked questions about the present and future of VR. One of driving points of this session was that there are approximately 75 million millennials. The millennial population is a population that has four main attributes: They want choice, don’t like (want) forced instruction, want to save time and they are multitaskers. If you service doesn’t meet these needs, they will not use it. Well I must be a millennial, because that sounds just like me.
What did I take from this session? Well, I’ve brought back several things. First, should everyone be providing VR? I’ve struggled with this idea for awhile now and it was nice to know that others struggle with it also. Fact is we’re all professionals and we do things in our own way, but some of our ways do not necessarily jib with the needs of our users. To that end I think more training is required. Specifically, focusing on what the patrons sees during a VR transaction.
The time for telephone reference is now. A panelist suggested this ice breaker, “Take out your cell phone, then have the students enter the reference departments number into their telephone.” Is that cool or what? This would give the instructor the opportunity to connect with students. Plus it opens the door for the next wave of technology for us. Reference via text messaging; I haven’t figured out how to do this yet, but the gears are turning.
Web 2.0 (personalizing the web to meet your needs or getting only what you want from it) is also in important to the populations that we serve. The vast majority of users of VR will be the millennial group. So, we should embrace the things that they do more readily. Typos and typing short cuts are okay; within moderation and only if they use them. We sometimes build personal relationships at the physical reference desk. We should also try to do this when appropriate at the virtual reference desk. It’s okay to make things personal. “We need to think like our users and NOT like librarians.” The best quote of the day! :-{)
