Once Upon a Furl in a Podcast Long Ago: Using New Technologies to Support Library Instruction
This program was sponsored by the Women’s Studies Section of ACRL. It and was one of the best programs that I attended while at ALA and provided me with a lot of instruction ideas.
Joan Lippincott, Associate Executive Director, Coalition for Networked Information, started the program with an overview of the NetGen, characteristics of deeper learning, and implications for libraries and learning. Lippincott believes that we are now seeing a convergence of literacies. Specifically, written literacy, information literacy, technology literacy, and visual literacy. Libraries tend to focus on information literacy. However, information literacy is becoming more intertwined with technology literacy. Here Joan Lippincott pointed to Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century. She also highlighted the need for new teaching and learning partnerships with Center for Teaching and Learning, New Media Center, and Film/Media Arts Department. Lippincott also stressed that libraries are changing their focus from teaching library resources to teaching access to information and information tools. Lastly, librarians must help students shift from recreational uses of information to academic uses of information.

Kathy Burnett, Associate Professor, Information Studies, Florida State University stressed that in 10 years those entering the field of librarianship will be digital natives. She cited Mark Prensky’s article Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants and Joel Foreman’s article Next Generation: Educational Technology versus the Lecture (I think it interesting that both of these articles are freely available on the internet - completely bypassing the library.) She then discussed ways in which to use the following technologies in teaching:
- Podcasts and Vodcasts
- To bring other voices and faces into discussion
- Have students create oral presentations using podcast technologies
- Blogs and Social Networks
- support class and small group discussion
- encourage individual responsibility for information
- extend the bounds of the classroom
- Wikis
- support collaborative development of information resources & dissemination of information
- teach team work
- Games and Simulations
- explore relationships between physical and virtual
- teach concepts of programming
- engage kinetic and spatial learners
Dr. Burnett refered to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, specifically the Typology of Information and Communication Technology Users, although she was quick to point out that no one under the age of 18 was included in the study.
Kathryn Shaughnessy, Instructional Services Librarian at St. John’s University was the next speaker on the list. However, I had to get up and walk around at this point so I missed most of her presentation.
Heather Tompkins, Reference and Instruction Librarian at Carlton College was the last presenter and she talked about three ways in which the social web can be applied to library instruction:
- tool for preparing and designing instruction
- communicating and connection w/ students and faculty
- model for teaching concepts about academic research
Heather talked about social bookmarking using Furl and del.icio.us She collects websites using furl and del.icio.us and syndicates them using RSS to publish to her library’s Women and Gender Studies webpage. She used flickr to create an annotated map for a women’s studies BI session. Heather also made the correlation between tagging and controlled vocabulary as well as “friending” on My Space or Facebook to citation searching.
