Is the Learning Commons Enough? Asking the Better Questions

This session was presented by LAMA and co-sponsored by RUSA.  The panelists included an architect, an audiovisual executive/geek, an academic director, AND a librarian…  For me, the geek was the most fascinating (and dynamic); Mark Valenti, President of the Sextant Group, talked about wired/wireless technology, bandwidth, the demise of the World Wide Web (to be replace by the Great Global Grid, which will allow high-def quality online video), humionics, and tactile digital info (think virtual reality,  wearable technology, etc.)  He predicted that as soon as broadcast television goes completely digital, Google would buy up all of the UHF/VHF “channels” and we’d be headed for a true nationwide wireless network.  My favorite line from Valenti – “What is the slowest network connection you can stand?  The fastest you’ve ever used!” Check out Sextant’s library-related projects at http://www.thesextantgroup.com/projectslibrary.html

Nancy Schmidt, Director of the Learning Commons at the University of Guelph (Ontario) outlined the “pedagogy of enhancement” at the core of Guelph’s LC - supporting the learning process with programs that are supplemental, integrated, and embedded with the curricula.

The architect had cool pictures from a couple of projects – places with BIG budgets:  the University of Otago (New Zealand), and Seattle University. I left before the Yale University Librarian Emeritus spoke, but I bet Karen will be able to fill you in on his contributions.
