Travis Storey

New Navy ensign follows family tradition of service, healthcare

  • Hometown: Charleston
  • High School: Homeschooled
  • Major: Nursing

The U.S. Navy is in Travis Storey's blood. His father spent his career in hospital administration with the Navy, and his brother, Jacob, worked in healthcare in the Navy before being wounded in Afghanistan.

So, when the younger Storey was deciding on a career path, he knew that the Navy was a given, and he chose nursing because of the opportunities that he would have to make a difference in the lives of patients. He also knew that working in healthcare would give him the flexibility in the Navy to travel the world.

“We were raised to be patriotic,” Storey said.

Storey leaves the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in nursing and a rank of ensign in the U.S. Navy. He'll be stationed at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va., and hopes that he will be assigned afterward to a post in Italy, Hawaii or Japan.

“Nursing's tough,” Storey said, “but I wouldn't have traded my experience at Carolina for the world.”

He said that the College of Nursing's academic reputation and the tradition of ROTC at Carolina led him to the university.

“I've had so many opportunities for personal and professional growth,” he said, citing his clinical experiences in nursing as valuable for education and career.

In the future, Storey said he'd like to pursue a graduate degree in nursing or a related healthcare field.

For now, he's looking forward to serving his country.

“All young men should serve at least a couple of years in the military,” he said.
