Applicant must be a student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. This is a one-year, non-renewable scholarship. The Saul Lavisky Scholarship was established by family and friends of Saul Lavisky who died in 1982. Mr. Lavisky earned his bachelor's and master's in Journalism at USC, and he left behind a distinguished career in public relations and education that spanned more than a quarter century.

Applicant must be a Broadcast Journalism major in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The student must have completed J325 and J326. The G. Richard Shafto Student Fellowships are for Broadcast Journalism Majors who want an intense internship experience at WIS-TV and it's Emmy Award winning Newsroom. The Sfafto Student Fellow spends at least 200 hours of internship work in the WIS Newsroom, working with reporters, producers, and news management as a part of the daily new operation of the station. Students receive a $3,000 stipend as part of the internship, and then bring their experiences back to the classroom as they work with the Senior Semester Newscast.

The South Carolina Broadcasters Association will award six $2,000 scholarships for the 2005-2006 school year. Scholarships will be awarded as follows: one freshman recipient, one sophomore recipient, two junior recipients and two senior recipients. Students must be enrolled in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications majoring in Broadcast Journalism and incoming freshmen must be residents of South Carolina. Scholarship applications will be mailed to all SC high schools in late February 2005 and upperclassmen will receive notification in their Journalism classes.

The following criteria must be met by each applicant: the student must be on a publication or broadcasting staff which is a member of SIPA, must have a good academic record, must attend the USC School of Journalism and Mass Communications and plan a career in journalism/mass communications, and must attend the annual SIPA Convention.

The Scholarship will be awarded to a deserving undergraduate student with demonstrated financial need majoring in journalism and mass communications. One scholarship shall be presented to an out of state student. The second scholarship will be presented to a student from S.C., preferably a graduate of T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, S.C. If this criteria cannot be met, preference will be a given from Anderson or Laurens County. If this criteria cannot be met, the award may be given to an in state or out of state student.

This scholarship will be awarded to a worthy student majoring in journalism with first priority to a student from Marlboro Academy in SC and second priority to a student from the Oak Ridge School in Austin, TX. If no student from these designated high schools is available, the scholarship may be awarded to any worthy student majoring in journalism.

Mr. Sutherland established this scholarship in 1990 for University of South Carolina Journalism majors after visiting the campus as the featured speaker at the USC student chapter of Society of Professional Journalists banquet. He began his journalism career in 1963 and is currently editor of The Tennessean in Nashville.

The Joseph Whitlock Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends of Joseph Whitlock, a noted sports writer and a graduate of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

This scholarship was established by the Charleston Post and Courier Newspaper to encourage underrepresented students in South Carolina to pursue education and careers in newspaper journalism. Applicants must be South Carolina residents and must enroll in the newspaper track of the Print and Electronic Sequence of USC's School of Journalism and Mass Communications. This scholarship is renewable until graduation for students who maintain a B average and show evidence of professional growth. This is a merit scholarship whose recipient is selected after application and an interview by Post and Courier staff.

Regulations for the fellowship stipulate that recipients must be enrolled in at least 9 hours of classes per semester. Students with graduate assistantships need to be enrolled in 6 hours per semester to qualify.

The Wayne Seal Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Wayne Seal, who was killed in 1974 in an airplane crash, to recognize his public and professional service to the government and media in South Carolina.
