The Economic Impact of the University of South Carolina
USC's eight campuses and the higher earnings of its alumni contribute $4 billion to the state's economy. This level of economic activity supports a total of 49,850 jobs and an associated $1.5 billion in total household income. The total impact on employment represents about 2.7 percent of the state's total employment base. Included in these totals are USC expenditures supported by external research funding. During fiscal year 2003-04, these research-supported expenditures totaled $117.1 million for all USC campuses and resulted in the following economic impacts for South Carolina (all of which are included in overall totals listed above):
• $213.3 million in total economic output
• $97.3 million in total household income
• 3,200 total jobs
• $6.5 million in state tax revenue
