Trombone Shout Bands from the United House of Prayer

By Richie Unterberger (allmusic.com)

The United House of Prayer for All People church, founded in Massachusetts in the early 1900s by Daddy Grace, had over 135 churches across the nation by the late 1990s. Trombone shout bands--basically bands playing New Orleans-style traditional jazz, dominated by trombones of course, and devoted largely to a repertoire of hymns and spirituals--are a big part of the church's services. This has nineteen tracks of trombone shout music, recorded by six bands between 1990 and 1996 for the Folk Masters public radio show. To a casual listener not aware of the affiliations with the United House of Prayer for All People, this would sound very much like New Orleans brass band jazz music, though it's heavy on spirituals such as "He Touched Me," "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," and "Oh, Happy Day" (although less gospel-oriented numbers like "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "America the Beautiful" also appear). It's joyous music, if not as musically imaginative as that played by secular jazz brass band innovators.
