Hope Derrick

Associate Director for Strategic Communications, Strategic Communications

Office: War Memorial

Hope’s career has come full circle.

In college, she spent two years as a copy editor at Boston University Publications until her graduation from BU with a BS in Journalism.  In 2013, she returned to higher education to work with the extraordinary USC communications team to help advance the university’s mission and brand.  Serving in strategic communications, she works closely with the president and his leadership team to engage in relevant issues on the state and national level.

In the interim between stints in higher education communications, Hope gained valuable experience in journalism and public relations. Having grown up in Columbia, she returned home after college and worked as a radio and television reporter before getting involved in politics. She went on to serve as the first Communications Director of the South Carolina Democratic Party and spent 18 years as U.S. Congressman Jim Clyburn’s Communications Director.

Hope is married to a public school teacher who earned an MAT from USC and served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Education.  They have two teen-aged children who keep them busy on weekends traveling to competitive gymnastics meets around the Southeast.
