BG Scholarship
Older people have great stories. Now there is a competition to reward high school journalists– grades 9 through 12 – for telling those stories on www.bgtime.org, a website run by the South
Carolina Office on Aging. (BG TIME stands for Bridging Generations through Technology,
Information, Media and Engagement.)
The purpose of the competition is to reward good journalism that crosses generations. The
work can be done by the students about a senior citizen or in cooperation with a senior. The BG
TIME site does not specifically define senior citizen, but as a general rule, one can assume it is
someone over the age of 50.
The student who produces the best story this school year – between Oct. 1 and April 1 –will
receive a $1,000 scholarship. Second place will receive a $750 scholarship. Third place will
receive $500.
In addition, each faculty adviser of the three winners will receive $250.
Stories, like the ones currently on the site, can run the gamut from soft feature stories, oral or
written history or insights on contemporary issues. In the competition, priority will be given
to stories that utilize more than one medium, including but not limited to blog entries, other
forms of text, audio, slideshows, video and interactive graphics.
Participants are encouraged to include a social media component, if appropriate, with their
stories.
