COLUMNS

Class A:

Judge's Comments: The topics covered and the positions taken on them were interesting. The columns that let the personality of the writer shine through or that tackled social/political issues were the most effective. It's best to avoid using lots of quotes from others in columns. A column should be your opinion bolstered by research, facts, and logic rather than a news story reporting the opinions of others. And, don't be afraid to let columns be a little longer so you have the space to really dig into topics.

Class B:

Judge's Comments: These writers were very willing to share their emotions and personal experiences and to tackle social issues. That makes for great column writing!

EDITORIALS

Judge's Comments: Editorials are UNBYLINED. They express the views of the newspaper (staff) and therefore do not use “I.” Use of “editorial we.” If you use “we” in an editorial, you should be refering to the staff…..it’s the staff’s opinion. And since it is the staff’s opinion, you don’t have to  keep saying “we.” In fact, you can usually write an editorial without the pronoun – just say, for example,  the Trojan staff.

The purpose of the editorial is to give the staff a voice. Thus the staff needs to have an opinion. This is the place where the staff can take a leadership role in the school. And even if the staff’s opinion is not unanimous, the majority should agree with the editorial’s viewpoint.

Note: Exactly “whose” opinion on the staff needs to be determined. If the staff is small, it might be everyone. But it is difficult to get everyone to agree, so it’s better to have a consensus of agreement or to determine who will vote. Some staffs say the editorial board – but just who is on the editorial board must be determined. Some say just the section editors. Just decide who is the voice.

In editorials and all other types of journalistic writing, avoid “many” as much as possible. It’s a vague reference - how many are you talking about?

FEATURES

Judge's Comments: Students entered fascinating stories based on many interesting topics. One word of advice: Never release a story for publication without making sure it is the best it can be, especially in the areas of spelling and grammar and the elimination of typos. While easy to make in first drafts, such mistakes, especially when present in the first few sentences of an article, can kill a reader's enthusiasm for the story. It's also important to work toward writing stories that have more than one source.
