Bachelor of Arts in Special Education

There is a great need for qualified educators who can work with students a variety of abilities. This multicatigorial program offers instruction in emotional, learning, and intellectual disabilities and, provides teacher education candidates with a wide range of practical experiences in public education settings. Each teacher education candidate receiving this degree will have a broad liberal arts and general education foundation as well as specific information regarding the abilities and needs of individuals with disabilities and their families. Graduates will be qualified to apply for teacher certification through the state department of education to work in the K-12 classroom. In addition, the graduate could work for social services agencies and other organizations that address the needs of children with disabilities.

Overview

The USC Aiken Bachelor of Arts in Special Education degree is designed to prepare you for success as a teacher of special needs children in grades K-12 .The curriculum  provides a foundation upon which the pedagogy and pedagogical content knowledge  are built and dispositions such as responsible citizenship, respect for diversity, and cross-cultural understandings  are developed. Your education degree from USC Aiken will prepare you to become a successful Dynamic Educator who can plan, instruct, manage, communicate, and grow professionally.

Prerequisites & Requirements

To apply for this online degree program, students must have:

  • 45-60 credit hours from a regionally accredited institution
  • Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA
  • Completion of the following courses:
    • Composition
    • Composition and Literature
    • College Algebra
    • Public Speaking or Interpersonal Communication
    • Biology cours with a Lab
    • Non-Biology course with or without a Lab
    • Introductory Psychology
    • Social or Behavioral Science
    • Humanities
    • World Civilization
    • American History or American Government

 

Program Length

If you’re a full-time student, the program should take about two years—the same as if you were attending class in-person. If you work, you may need to take a lighter course load.
