Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Degree Program at the University of South Carolina Upstate is designed to provide present and future criminal justice professionals with the educational background necessary to be successful in a criminal justice career, graduate school, or law school.  The program offers introductory courses in the three major areas of the criminal justice system:  Law enforcement, courts, and corrections. As well as a wide variety of upper division courses including advanced topics in criminological theory, violence, corrections, delinquency, victimology, and research methods. 

Purpose Statement

The Palmetto Criminal Justice Degree Program was specifically designed for college students with approximately two or more years of accredited college coursework.  Additionally, the unique design of online learning allows those currently employed, raising families, or otherwise unable to attend classes in a traditional campus setting to earn their degree online.

 What Can I Do With a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the USC Upstate?

This degree program serves students seeking to begin careers in the criminal justice field and those already working as criminal justice professionals who want to increase their opportunities for upward mobility.  In addition, the degree can provide a solid academic foundation for those seeking an advanced degree or wishing to attend law school.  The degree with enable students to be eligible for a myriad of local, state, and federal careers including: law enforcement, probation, parole, and correctional agencies, adult and juvenile social service or government agencies, and law offices or court facilities.

Accreditation

USC Upstate is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Commission on Colleges.

Prerequisites & Requirements

Students who have previously attended USC or other regionally accredited colleges/universities in the United States and have attained 45 to 60 credit hours may be considered for admittance into the program

Program Length

The degree completion time is dependent on the number of courses that are accepted by USC Upstate for transfer credit and number of courses a student successfully completes each semester.  Students are generally able to complete the program in two years or less, depending on their ability to manage coursework, career, family, and other life circumstances.

Real Work Experience/Field Experience

Students can participate in internships, field research, service learning, and academic projects as part of their academic experience.  Palmetto College students have also participated in national and regional academic travel as part f the degree program.

Important Dates

USC Upstate and the Palmetto Criminal Justice Degree Program offers a "rolling" application process which allows students to apply anytime.  Actual class schedules generally operate on traditional semester based terms.  Fall (August-December); Spring (January-May); Summer (May-August).  The USC Upstate/Palmetto Criminal Justice Program is designed to help students decide how long or short their degree goal will take by offering a wealth of classes in all three semesters and by also offering many courses in half-semester increments to allow for greater balance for those employed or working varying shifts.
