A message to students at the start of summer

Dear Students,

It's just a few weeks into our summer.  During the relative cool of the evening, Patricia and I often walk our beautiful but all too quiet campus. It may seem odd to you that we miss the activity, but we much prefer to see the hammocks swinging, the Frisbees flying and many of you studying on your blankets. You might say that we're already counting the days until all of you return.

Have a safe summer, try something new, meet someone new, have engaging conversation, read great books and enjoy your friends and family.

Even so, meaningful work is still in progress at Carolina as many students are taking full advantage of On Your Time summer courses. These extra classes will allow many of you to graduate early, accept an internship in the fall, or participate in a semester abroad.

Whether you are here or away, I hope your summer is exciting and productive. I'm anxious to hear about your work, vacations and community service. Many of you will be traveling abroad and learning new customs and ideas, others will hike or bike through the inspiring landscape of America and many of you will also intern or work to earn experience and money. Wherever you go, please throw a couple of paperbacks into your backpack. The electronic version might be more manageable, especially if you're reading War and Peace, but it may interest you to know that a recent experiment performed in Norway found that people who read passages on paper actually scored higher on comprehension than those who used electronic devices. I wouldn't worry about that though; just read for fun and to learn. That's one of my favorite benefits of summer.

Here in Columbia, we will be enjoying the delicious food that our hospitality students are cooking up at the McCutchen House Garden Grille, but mainly we will be working enthusiastically throughout the summer to make sure that each of you has an exceptional student experience in the fall.

Have a safe summer, try something new, meet someone new, have engaging conversation, read great books and enjoy your friends and family. August will come quickly and when it does, your Carolina family will be right here, on and around campus, to welcome you home!

See you soon.
