Residence Life Coordinator

How to Apply

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or related field
  • Prior residence hall experience preferred
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Strong written and verbal skills are essential
  • Training/teaching abilities in a work setting
  • Prior experience assisting students in connecting their curricular experiences with aligned learning outcomes
  • Exceptional skills in interpersonal relationships and a sincere concern for others
  • Ability to organize and work with student groups, both formal and informal
  • Managerial skills, including the ability to organize and supervise staff
  • Ability to work with faculty, parents and other staff
  • Able to pass required criminal background check

Responsibilities

  • Regular contact with the assistant director for the area assigned
  • RLCs report directly to an area assistant director, but are accountable to multiple colleagues for the effective day-to-day operation of residence halls and departmental operations
  • Annual review as designated by Human Resources and state guidelines
  • Because of the high student to staff ratio and the wide scope of responsibilities encompassed in this position, the employee must exercise a great deal of independent performance and discretionary judgment

Academic Enhancement

  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of residential learning communities
  • Facilitate working partnerships with campus partners
  • Coordinate Community Education Teams (CETs) involving students, a variety of departmental staff, faculty and academic staff to plan, implement and assess learning experiences for residents
  • Provide leadership and direction for area staff
  • Understand the Common Courses program and provide guidance for its integration with other educational efforts
  • Advise individual residents
  • Maintain continual awareness of resident concerns through regular student contact
  • Promote and ensure student staff resident mentors (RMs) develop personal one-on-one relationships with residents
  • Support, interpret, implement and enforce university and departmental policies and procedures
  • Assist in the judicial process and work with appropriate departments

Community Enhancement

  • Create and implement inclusive, supportive communities that foster and enhance students' learning, development and academic success
  • Promote diverse and appropriate developmental activities
  • Provide leadership and direction for hall staff
  • Promote study group formation and similar strategies
  • Advise hall government, floor governments and student groups to develop and maintain effective community governance and to foster leadership opportunities
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) by promoting resident participation in sponsored activities
  • Advise Community Education Teams and community leadership
  • Be visible on floors, talking informally with residents about academic, personal or community success, issues or concerns

Administrative and Building/Area Management

  • Coordinate the thorough, timely and accurate completion of reports and other administrative tasks per departmental standard operating procedures
  • Support area and departmental staff in monitoring and administering resident occupancy, desk operations and general office procedures
  • Maintain regular office hours
  • Serve as an advocate for quality management of residence halls by reporting maintenance issues
  • Assist with the design and implementation of residence hall, area and departmental assessment initiatives
  • Maintain effective desk operations through the recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation of desk staff
  • Coordinate and conduct health and safety inspections
  • Facilitate the opening and closing of the residence hall
  • Be accountable for the management of hall government budget and learning community budget
  • Coordinate summer conference and summer school activities and services in assigned area
  • Coordinate break housing services for assigned area
  • Support the Marketing and Communications office, Residential Learning Initiatives office, Admissions office, Visitor Center and academic units in recruitment initiatives
  • Serve on the professional staff duty rotation

Supervision

  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection and evaluation process for resident mentors (RMs)
  • Facilitate and participate in departmental training programs and provide on-going training of RMs and Conference Assistants (CAs)
  • Instruct a one-hour resident mentor course
  • Supervise RMs in the performance of their responsibilities through regular contact, conducting weekly staff integration in CETs and through on-going evaluations
  • Supervise office assistants and desk assistants (DAs)
  • Supervise break housing (Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Break) staff
  • Supervise summer RMs/CAs in completing duties related to summer conference programs
